“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
This is a Greek proverb I encountered at some point last year. Like millions of others, I’ve been watching Netflix’s new season of House of Cards. There was a conversation between two characters regarding a partnership, and Spacey said the word “self-interest.” This combined with the recent streak of snow and seeing some mentions of climate change online brought this quote to mind.
Oftentimes, we become short-sighted because of many things, including the fact that we’re secretly lazy creatures and the far future can be too intangible too take very seriously. I’m still young and benefiting from the shade of the billions of great people who lived before me, so I hope to remember this quote throughout my life to motivate my decisions and to help create a world that’s better than the one I entered.
